Artist Profile :: Manu Parekh

"I work like an actor: I remain the same actor, but perform and create situations within a different role", says Manu Parekh. This sums up Manu Parekhs' attitude towards his works, and to a certain extent explains the vareity of subjects, like the Benaras series, the heads, and the still life objects that he depicts in his paintings.

Polemics have always intrigued Manu Parekh - the energy of the organic form, the inherent sexuality within the forms, are intangible elements in his works. His paitings provoke veiwers to take notice of the world around them, through the emotion, pain and anguish expressed in the subjects of his paintings. His works, colours, forms, exude a volatile energy that can be barely contained within the frame work, and become an extension of the artist's personality.

Manu Parekh highlights his relationship with his wife Madhvi, who is a self taught artist, and his admiration for Picasso as key influences on his works. His stay in the city of Calcutta, drew him towards Shantiniketan particularly, the old masters of Indian art, Ram Kinkar Baij and Rabindranath Tagore, more at a perceptual level than stylistic, and urged him to delve into the deep thought that underlies his work.

Manu Parekh lives in Delhi, with his wife, Madhvi and daughter Manisha, who are also established artists in their own right!
